Provides an overview of U.S. policy concerns and objectives in the South Caucasus republics of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia following the collapse of the Soviet Union, and examines developments and implications for U.S. interests relating to: Russia's involvement in the region; roles of Turkey, Iran, and others; obstacles to peace and independence, including political instability, blockades and stoppages, and regional tensions and conflicts; separatist conflicts in Abkhazia and Nagorno Karabakh; democratization; U.S. support for economic reforms; trade and investment, including energy resources; and U.S. assistance to the region.
