Reviews current meat and poultry inspection authority and requirements and discusses recent reform efforts and Congressional activity on comprehensive reform and inspection funding. Examines regulatory activities and selected issues, including microbial testing, irradiation, enforcement, State inspection, country-of-origin labeling, livestock diseases, and U.S.-European Union trade issues. Discusses roles of the Food Safety and Inspection Service and the FDA, and authorizing legislation in the Federal Meat Inspection Act, the Poultry Products Inspection Act, and the Egg Products Inspection Act.
