Provides an overview of U.S. policy concerns and objectives in Central Asia following the collapse of the Soviet Union, and examines developments and implications for U.S. interests relating to: fostering of pro-Western orientations, including Russia's role; obstacles to peace and independence, especially regional tensions and conflicts; democratization and human rights; security and arms control; trade and investment, including energy resources; and U.S. assistance to the region.
