- Self-educated erudite who dreamt of becoming a fresco painter, he suffered very early on from the upheavals of his time. Traumatized by World War I that he lived on the front line and seriously injured on the Chemin des Dames, André Masson (1896-1987) remained a tormented soul with a quick temper, sometimes violent, but also an independent and lonely artist, rebellious against all forms of authority.
