- Note
- Rare Books copy: Inscribed by the author to Styron's bibliographer James L.W. West III: "To Jim, My partner in Styron crime. [signed] Rhoda." Laid in are two mail-order catalogs from University of America Press offering the book, and a note written by Styron to West on an index card dated 11/2/95: "Dear Jim. Thanks for lending me Rhoda's book. It was invaluable in writing The Talk I'm giving at the Holocaust Museum on Nov. 9, and will perform double duty since I'm going to repeat The Talk in Charlotte two days later. Also, I greatly appreciate the other edition of Five Chimneys -- it wasn't until I re-read it that I realized what an impact it had on me in 1947. (I sent the Hunter College copy back to Rhoda). God how I hate the early darkness of these Nov. days. Oh well - Best [signed] BS." Rare Books copy also signed by West on half-title.
