- Summary
- Concerns about obtaining information about multinational enterprises (MNEs) are evident in past and current efforts by groups such as the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the United Nations, and the European Economic Community. Previous studies of the impact of MNEs on workers have identified the lack of data about the companies as one of labor's concerns, but have not gone further to specify the information wanted. Past research dealing with disclosures to workers has not analyzed the problems relevant to MNEs and has made no attempt to match labor's perceptions with management's. The purpose of this study was to identify labor's major sources and uses of information about MNEs, criticisms of that data, and recommendations for improvement. Managers of the same companies identified the information that they provided to workers, criticisms of the data supplied, and acceptable and unacceptable solutions to the problems.
Management is the major source of information about the company though labor criticizes the lack of detail in historical reports and the lack of future information available. United States workers support consultative groups and worker representation on the corporate board to resolve the problems, while Canadian workers favor expanded disclosure laws. Management is concerned about the effect of disclosures on competitiveness.
The International Metalworkers' Federation (IMF) is a major source of information about working conditions worldwide in general and within the industry and specific companies. Data is obtained by labor at meetings of the IMF's world auto councils and from IMF publications. - Other Subject(s)
