- Summary:
- The purpose of this study was to investigate levels of global awareness among high school home economics teachers as related to (1) international and cross-cultural experience and (2) the variables of age, level of education, teaching position, subject area specialty, length of teaching experience, multiple language fluency, and rural or urban perspective on life.
The sample was comprised of 322 home economists who were randomly selected from the membership of the elementary, secondary, and adult section of the American Home Economics Association. For the purpose of this study, an instrument was developed by the researcher to measure attitudes toward selected issues on a continuum ranging from global/cosmopolitan to local/provincial. These issues included international/cross-cultural issues, appropriate technology, technologic literacy, voluntary simplicity, sustainable lifestyle, and balanced development. A biographic data section was also included with the instrument. Questionnaires were mailed to 500 subjects.
Analysis of the data revealed that teachers of home economics have relatively high levels of global/cosmopolitan awareness and hold positive attitudes toward the concepts selected for the study. No significant relationship was found to exist between levels of global/cosmopolitan awareness and international/cross-cultural experiences, or age, level of education, teaching position, length of teaching experience, subject matter specialty, type and duration of cross-cultural experience, fluency in multiple languages, or a rural versus urban perspective on life. - Other Subject(s):
