- Summary
- The purpose of this thesis was to appraise the African Flag Airlines in the current international aviation environment. The objectives of the research were: (1) To determine whether or not the national flag airlines of African countries have valid and vital roles to play in their nations' social, political, and economic objectives. (2) To identify problems facing these airlines in the current international economic and aviation environments. (3) To determine how such airlines are performing relative to the airlines of the industrialized nations. (4) To develop some quantitative techniques for objective carrier evaluation as an aid to their planning process.
The research was limited to airlines of the three sub-regions of Africa consisting of Eastern, Central, and Western Africa. Only the passenger transportation aspect of their operations was studied. Twenty two national airlines and one consortium airline in the region were studied.
The first two objectives were achieved primarly through literature review and analysis of facts. A statistical review of available information relating to the operating scope and financial performance for a number of the airlines in the region of interest were performed. The third objective was achieved by comparing statistical data on the airlines studied with some selected IATA averages.
To achieve the fourth objective three models were developed. Using the simple break-even analysis approach models were developed for: (1) Operating level profitability analysis. (2) Range of rate flexibility analysis for profitable carriers. (3) Determination of subsidy requirements for unprofitable carriers.
The following conclusions were arrived at through the research results: (1) The air carriers of the African regions studied are playing valid and vital roles in the economic, social, and political objectives of their nations. (2) The problems of the airlines of the region include: (a) Scarcity of funds for equipment modernization and developmental projects. (b) Low level of intra-African traffic in the region. (c) Political instability and interference in the management of the carriers. (d) Lack of trained manpower and high cost of training of human resources. (3) The financial results of most carriers in the region have been relatively poor. (4) The quantitative models developed proved to be good predictors of profitability but the results cannot be generalized until tested with a large number of carriers' financial results. - Other Subject(s)
