- Summary
- The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an English Immersion Program in Puerto Rico on oral language production, school adjustment, and school sentiment.
The sample consisted of 60 junior high school students in grade eight. There were 20 females and 40 males in the sample. The Oral Language Group Assessment, the Inventario del Sentimiento Hacia la Escuela, and the Prueba de Ajuste al Salon de Clase were administered at the beginning of the treatment and toward the end. These tests were designed to provide information about: (a) English oral language proficiency; (b) school sentiment; and (c) school adjustment.
An analysis of variance of repeated measures (ANOVR) was utilized to determine if there were any differences between groups after the treatment. The investigator analyzed the performance of each of these groups to determine if the immersion approach was the most appropriate method of teaching oral communication skills.
This study found that Immersion Programs are effective in the teaching of aural/oral skills in English. It was also found that Immersion Programs foster positive school sentiment and adjustment toward school.
It was concluded that second language Immersion Programs should be part of the English curriculum. Students from deprived areas and who are underachievers need diversified teaching strategies in order to attain the goals of the English program. When planning a program of study for students with limited English proficiency, intensive oral language development in the second language should be considered. - Other Subject(s)
