- Summary:
- Lithium--aluminum/iron sulfide secondary batteries are being developed for use as power sources for electric vehicles and as stationary energy storage devices for load-leveling on electric utilities. The corrosiveness of the active materials and molten electrolyte places severe restrictions on the type of materials that can be used for current collectors, separators, and feedthrough insulators. Out-of-cell and in-cell tests are being conducted to identify the materials that are compatible with this cell environment. The corrosion test procedures, the nature and kinetics of the corrosion reactions, and the development and testing of electrode separators are discussed. 5 figures, 5 tables.
