The solvent dependence of the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer band pattern of tris-bipyridyl ruthenium(II) derivatives with carbonyl substituents is attributed to a reduction in the energy required for electron transfer to the dicarbonylated bipyridyl ligand with an increase in solvent polarity.
