- Summary:
- In conduct of the Sodium Loop Safety Facility (SLSF) experiment program in the Engineering Test Reactor (ETR), destructive tests are performed with up to 37 full length (0.914m fuel zone) LMFBR type fuel pins in a sodium environment. Operation of such experiments in a light water reactor like the ETR requires careful attention to safety. A major problem is how to run destructive experiment transients of sufficient duration to satisfy sponsors needs without jeopardizing the reactor. The paper discusses the way in which EG and G has minimized the difference between nominal and design basis transients, thereby allowing destructive tests of maximum safe duration.
