- Summary
- The copper cable recycling technology shreds and grinds shrouded copper cable into small particles and an air classifier separates the lighter cable insulation from the heavier copper granules. Contaminated dust is filtered through a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter prior to atmospheric discharge. About 15 tons of copper cable ranging from 0.03 to 0.40 inches in diameter will be processed during the November 1999 demonstration. Since The copper cable recycling technology is already used commercially in German power plants to recycle copper, the demonstration is expected to be a technical success. The demonstration is expected to verify the cost-effectiveness of the copper recovery system compared to DOE's baseline approach which is removal and direct disposal of contaminated copper cable.
