The observed strain-rate dependence of stress strain curves with and without dynamic recrystallization is analyzed. It is found to be incompatible with models of a strictly time-dependent, ``simultaneous static`` recrystallization. The activation energy of dynamic recrystallization is strongly stress dependent: similar, but not identical, to that of dynamic recovery. A new criterion for the transition from single-peak to double-peak behavior is proposed.
