- Summary
- The observed π⁺ emission from the weak decay of the ⁴{sub Λ}He hypernucleus has been an intriguing puzzle for more than 30 years, because the Lambda decays in free space only by emission of a π{sup −} or a π°. We re-examine this puzzling weak decay with our focus upon a decay mechanism involving the Σ⁺N → π⁺nN decay of a virtual Σ⁺, stemming from ΛN to ΣN conversion (mixing) within the hypernucleus. We emphasize the observed energy distribution of the observed π⁺s compared to that of π⁻s in standard mesonic decay as well as the isotropic angular distribution of the π ⁺s. Competing suggestions to explain the positive pion weak decay have been offered. A possible search for π⁺ decay from the other Λ hypernuclei is explored as means to test our hypothesis.
