The physical models upon which the BCM (bedded crack model) is based are described. Calculations of a cratering event in the Colony Oil Shale mine in Colorado are presented. The process of crater formation is outlined based on computer simulations. The BCM is a statistical model which describes fracture in terms of the growth of microcracks. (DMC)
