- Summary:
- 1996 sadly saw the death of two of the world's leading lights. At the age of 78, Ella Fitzgerald, First Lady of Song, passed away after a sixty year career; and the world of science mourned the death of American Scientist Carl Sagan, who passed away after contracting pneumonia. In other news, the French nuclear tests in the Pacific met with new resistance, with protesters meeting in St Peter's Square waving banners saying 'Chirac, Listen to the Pope!' Anti-nuclear protests continued throughout the world, from Washington to the Disarmament conference, at the UN headquarters in Geneva.
