This photograph of the members of the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition was taken in the Washington studio of the brother of expedition photographer George W. Rice. This print from that original unretouched negative was apparently distributed immediately after the return of the survivors. While those who returned alive are correctly identified, many of the other names are mixed up. On the reverse is rubber-stamped "S.C. Reed, photographer, 4 Pleasant Street, Newburyport, Mass. instantaneous process for children." Reed probably bought copies to sell locally as Newburyport was Greely's hometown.
