- Summary
- The inspiring true story of Dena Epstein, music librarian and author of the groundbreaking book, Sinful tunes and spirituals: Black folk music to the Civil War. Epstein spent 25 years researching the musical contributions introduced to the New World by Africans brought over in slavery. Among other things, her findings documented that the banjo had been introduced to North America by Africans. The film also discusses how her work helped to spark a revival of black string band music.
