- Summary
- Krakow, Poland, was the birthplace of Henryk Vogler, writer and Holocaust survivor; his son, Pavel; and Vogler's granddaughter Sara. After Pavel and Sara immigrated to America for medical treatment for Sara, she questioned why her grandfather remained in Krakow after the war when so many other Jews had departed. Here, Vogler's life story is told by Pavel, using as its backdrop the beauty of the medieval city of Krakow and its cultural past. The senior Vogler recalls that in September 1939 he was "the happiest manin the world," newly married adn about to publish his first novel. Vogler details the loss of everything he held dear during World War II, his miraculous survival in a concentration camp, and his postwar return to Krakow--the only place where, as a write, he could express himself in his native language. Vogler's career flourished and, after he remarried, the birth of Pavel gave his life new hope and meaning.
