Summary
In this third interview, Brown discusses his conflict with Ed Swayduck of Local One (New York City) of the Amalgamated Lithographers of America (ALA) union, his efforts to make Ben Robinson choose between being legal counsel for the International and being legal counsel for Local One, his close relationship with Leon Wickersham, and his speculations about why the lithographers (a craft union) joined the CIO. He talks about the mergers with the Photoengravers and the Bookbinders and the union's abortive attempt at merger with the Stereotypers, its relationship with the Printing Pressmen's Union, and Local One's secession from the union and affiliation with the Independent Textile Union. Brown attempted to strengthen employer-union relations through early retirement and training programs. He discusses this as well as the impact of conglomerates and multinational firms on the industry, the union's liberal political stands, and its relations with Canadian locals. There are many details about the motivations for and methods of merging two unions and a discussion of sex discrimination within the unions.
