- Summary:
- Portrays Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919), the twenty-sixth president of the United States, as a deft politician and skillful diplomat whose magnetic personality and genius for publicity made him a legend in his own time. Underscores Roosevelt's key role in creating the modern presidency and illustrates how he expanded the power of the Oval Office to regulate big business, introduce sweeping social reforms, and accelerate America's rise as a world power. Covers his leadership in the building of the Panama Canal and his permanent legacy of national parks and forests. Also explores the influences that shaped his childhood and delves into the many facets of the man who would be president at age forty-two: cowboy, soldier, explorer, scientist, world authority on birds and mammals, and author of thirty-six books. Makes the point, however, that behind his unbridled confidence was a man haunted by grief.
