- Payne received letters from: Jean-Joseph Jacotot, 15 March 1831, thanking him for his effort in disseminating the principles of his system of universal instruction; Roden Noel, 3 February 1863, about his book [Behind the veil and other poems]; W.B. Hodgson, 23 February 1867, sending six autographs [not included] and commenting on Payne's upcoming paper on Jacotot; Francisque Michel, 22 April 1871, about his book.
From an unidentified correspondent, 13 June 1872, thanking Payne for sending his paper; Charles Kingsley, 4 July 1873 postcard, giving him permission [to use one of his poems] but that he must also get Macmillans' permission; R.H. Horne, 7 May 1874, accepting a dinner invitation; G.O. Trevelyan, n.d., recommending Payne for the professorship of English language and literature at Owen's College.
