Discusses issues related to production of "pits," which are the fissile core and plutonium "trigger" of nuclear warheads. Examines current DOE pit production rate of 11 pits per year (ppy) despite DOD stated requirements for a capacity of 50 to 80 ppy, and provides framework for analyzing requirements for pit manufacturing. Details key questions, and considers possibility that Congress may choose to direct National Nuclear Security Administration to generate the data needed to answer them.
