- Biographical or Historical Sketch
- This map was created in 1830 by George Jones, a Yale graduate and native of York, Pennsylvania, from an original by Colonel John L. Butler. Jones, who had served as a tutor and secretary on board a pair of U.S. Navy frigates, was home on leave when he created this map. He was to be ordained in 1831, and would serve as a Naval Chaplain starting in 1832, accompanying the Perry Expedition to Japan from 1852-1854. It was engraved by the renowned New Haven artist Amos Doolittle for the Yale-affiliated publication, The American Journal of Science and Arts.
