- This thesis will explore the theme of identity in Holocaust Literature specifically through the lens of Reader-Response Criticism for students in a 10th grade English classroom. Through the works of Han Nolans If I Should Die Before I Wake and Elie Wiesels Night, I analyze this theme, which is also a prevalent developmental task in the lives of adolescent readers. The method of analyzing the text through Reader-Response Criticism was chosen because it posits that the reader makes meaning of the reading based on the text and their own personal experiences that they bring to the table. In addition, lesson plans that support the analysis of identity in these two works are provided.
