- Summary
- Part 1: Conversations with the parents of Jean-Andre who was born at 27 weeks gestation and survived for six diffficult weeks. They describe in detail their child's struggle to live, his doctor's extensive efforts, and the many conflicts faced by everyone involved in the battle for his life.
Part 2: Six film portraits: two families, two nurses and two doctors. The experiences of the two families contrast dramatically. In one family a child born with complex cardiac anomalies is cured by immediate, semi-experimental surgery. In the other family a child born at 27 weeks now has bronchial pulmonary dysplasia and is at home. He has a tracheostomy, is completely oxygen-dependent and requires 24-hour care. The four medical professionals work in intensive care units. The nurses discuss decision-making in the medical hierarchy, describe their frustration with clinical responsibilities that are not matched with authority and relate the agonizing dilemma of bringing pain to children who may not heal. The doctors reveal their vulnerability in the face of profound ethical and clinical dilemmas that elude clear right or wrong answers--modern medicine requires them to grapple with the conflict between technological possibilities and human needs and emotions. - Subject(s)
