The present translation is based on the well-known version by John Oxenford and the Rev. A. J. W. Morrison, which was originally published in 1849. The editions of Dichtung und wahrheit which have been mainly used in making the revision are Heinemann's edition of Goethe's Werke, v. 13 and 14, and Cotta's Jubiläums ausgabe, with notes by Richard M. Meyer. For details as to Oxenford's translation, cf. note under entry of the Autobiography, 1848.
The earlier editions (Oxenford's version) are published under the title: The autobiography of Goethe. Truth and poetry from my own life.
