- Summary
- This monograph documents 40 years of projects and sculptures by American artist Elyn Zimmerman (born 1945), from her ephemeral 'Light and Space' works done in Los Angeles in the 1970s to her more recent major public commissions.
"Zimmerman was influenced by the California Light and Space art movement while a graduate student at UCLA. This direction of work was abruptly challenged by her experiences at archeological sites she visited while traveling in India, Italy and Israel in the late 1970's. Determined to find a way to make projects that embraced both sculpture and landscape while using the traditional material of stone, she looked to the work of Brancusi and Noguchi for guidance, and considered the projects of contemporary earthwork artists, especially Heizer and Smithson. This monograph is illustrated with both color and black and white images of the numerous site-determined public and private commissions that the artist completed on three continents during her career...The four essays in the book cover the span of Zimmerman's career to the present, including an exhibition history and bibliography. In addition, the artist created an illustrated timeline correlating her completed projects with the travels and studies that influenced their forms." - Subject(s)
