- Ngũgĩ wa Thiongʼo, born James Ngugi, is a Kenyan novelist, essayist, and playwright. Ngugi accepted a year's visiting professorship in African literature at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois--where he began writing Petals of Blood (1977)--before returning to Nairobi in August 1971 to take a lectureship in University College's Department of Literature. He most recently taught at New York University. His commitment to Kenya, combined with a technical mastery of fictional forms and a total command of both English and Gikuyu, make Ngugi wa Thiong'o preeminent among African writers.
