- Summary:
- Depicts eighty-nine-year-old Viola Dees in her struggle to raise her nine-year-old orphaned grandson, Walter, in South Central Los Angeles. Viola has to cope with Walter's erratic behavior, the product of in-utero exposure to crack; his mother's abandonment of him; and his father's death. To make matters worse, Viola's health is failing and the county family services agency believes she is too old to care for Walter, but age, she says, "has nothing to do with love." The program is intended to shed light on the changing role of grandparents in society and on the changing composition of the American family.
