- Summary
- Indole-containing natural products are very abundant and possess interesting medicinal properties. Work done in the Feldman Group has demonstrated the feasibility of novel reactions using indolidene and indolidenium cation intermediates that open new routes for the total synthesis of indole-containing natural products.1 One such compound is lecanindole D, which binds with high specificity and affinity to the human progesterone receptor.2 Prior work by Ina Gonzalez has demonstrated a novel approach for the synthesis of the tetracyclic core.3 Further work has studied the synthesis of a benzofuran analog. In addition to lecanindole D, the indole-containing ambiguine class of natural products has exhibited a wide range of fungicidal, insecticidal, and antibiotic activity.4 Work done by Kelly Simollardes has demonstrated the feasibility of generating the unique seven-membered ring found in many ambiguine compounds via a cyclization involving an indolidenium intermediate and various dienes. A specific diene is investigated for its use in synthesizing specific ambiguines.
