- Why is education offered, what is its goal, and whom does it serve? I address thesequestions by examining educational intent, a phrase I coined to mean the reasons for whicheducation has been provided. Part I of this thesis examines the educational intent of severaleducation systems in early American history, illustrating (1) that educational intents can bedesigned in controlling and self-serving ways, and (2) what negative effects can result from sucheducational intents. Part II of this thesis offers a model for developing better educational intentthat is both appropriate for and representative of its local community.
