- Summary
- The series traces the transforrmation and development of the European community--and western civilization as we know it today. Part 5 (Coal, blood and iron) describes how, when, and where coal was formed in Europe and how it was responsible for the Industrial Revolution which transformed life in Europe. The by-product of coal energy was massive social change, for both better and worse. Eventually, the quest for energy would be partly responsible for World War I, and as new energy sources become available, they too bring forth massive conflicts.
