- Summary
- The overall research effort was directed toward a better understanding of the processes cntrolling the cycling of elements in the ocean; including: distribution of trace elements in the interstitial water and sediments of near-shore environments; composition of interstitial water from the JOIDES project for long cores, from deep ocean water; sulfur isotope fractionation by dissimilatory sulfate reducing bacteria; application of S/sup 34//S/sup 32/ measurements to determine sulfur transformation in marine sediments; behavior of organic matter in marine sediments after burial; uranium uptake by phosphorite nodules and U/sup 234//U/sup 238/ ratios as an age indicator; and transformation and mobilization of uranium in recent reducing sediments. Special attention was focused on four marine environments: (1) the continental boderland off Southern California; (2) Saanich Inlet, a fjord in British Columbia; (3) the anomalous deeps in the Red Sea; and (4) deep sea sediments. A summary of the studies is given. Included are a set of reprints of published papers, manuscripts of articles submitted for publication, and abstracts of two dissertations submitted for Ph.D. degrees during 1969.
