- Summary
- The infrared spectrum of XeF/sub 4/ vapor has strong bands at 123, 291, and 586 cm/sup -1/. The Raman spectrum of the golid has very intense peaks at 502 and 543 om/sup -1/ and a weaker one at 235 cm/sup -1/. These data show that the molecule is planar and of symmetry D/sub 4h/. The seven fundamental frequencies were assigned as 543 (a/sub 1g/), 291 (a/sub 2u/), 235 (b/sub ig/), 221 (b/sub 1u/), 502 (b/sub ig/), 588 (e/sub u/), and 123 (e/sub u/), the assign ment of 221 cm/sup -1/ to b/sub iu/ being uncertain. The infrared spectrum of XeOF/sub 4/ vapor has intense peaks at 288, 382, 578, 609, and 928.2 cm/sup -1/ and the Raman spectrum of the liquid has bands at 231, 286, 364, 530, 586, and 918 cm/sup -1/. The spectra fit a C/sub 4v/ model very well. The fundamentals determined are: 928.2 (a/sub 1/), 578 (a/sub 1/), 288 (a/sub 1/), 231 (b/sub 1/), 530 (b/sub 2/) , 809 (e), and 382 (e). This leaves one (b/sub 2/) and one (e) fundamental undetermined. Very close correspondence between vibrations in the two molecules indicates that the O--Xe-- F angle in XeOF/sub 4/ must be rather close to 90 deg .
