- DS J.P. Benjamin, secretary of war for the Confederate States of America. Appointment of Samuel Churchill Clark as a cadet in the Corps of Artillery of the Army of the Confederate States. Includes two copies of the appointment and one blank copy of an oath of allegiance. Note at bottom of the oath states that Meriwether Lewis Clark accepted the appointment on behalf of his son December 5, 1861.
