A detailed eyewitness account of the battles of Churubusco and Chapultepec by an American soldier who was present during the fall of Mexico City, including a description of the storming of the Castle or Castillo of Chapultepec on Sept. 12-13, 1847. The writer of this letter, Chancy (or Cheney?) Buck, enlisted in Boston and joined Company B, 5th Infantry, in New York, and sailed for Vera Cruz ... Buck's letter covers the time period from June 4, 1847, when the 5th Infantry began its march to Mexico City, through the surrender of the city on September 3rd. He mentions attacks by Mexican troops, the horror of seeing men shot dead and wounded in the field, also the march to National Bridge, Perote, joining the army at Puebla, beginning the march to Mexico City, and the battles of Churubusco and Chapultepec.
