- Summary:
- Hayton (or Hetoum), an Armenian noble and ruler of the city of Corycus (Korikos) in Cilicia, was a nephew of King Hetoum I. Hayton was exiled by King Hetoum II in 1294 and worked as a monk in Cyprus before moving to an abbey at Poitiers in France where he became a prior. Here Hayton compiled his important travel accounts. These were: his geography of Asia, Histoire merveilleuse, plaisante et recreative du grand empereur de Tartarie, Grand-Khan; and, La fleur des histoires de la terre d'Orient (1307) in which he described the travels of King Hetoum I and the alliance between Armenia, Antioch and the Mongols, negotiated in 1259-1260.
