- Summary
- Description: Letters relating to land orders, transfers and surveying trips made in the New Zealand Company's first land purchase. Most are sent and received by the Secretary of State, the principle agent of the company, Edward Gibbon Wakefield, and the principal surveyor, Samuel Charles Brees. There are letters instructing persons to complete surveys of land surrounding Wellington available for immediate cultivation and settlement and intended to be granted to purchasers in London. Other letters refer to negotiations of payment made to the Maori from whom the land was purchased, with many enclosing notes documenting meetings held between Governor Fitzroy and Maori chiefs to discuss land claims and dispute sales. There are also copies of accounts for settlements of Wellington and Nelson, and New Zealand newspapers record articles relative to the Company and features advertisements of shipping companies and merchants.
- Note
- The New Zealand Company was a chartered company formed in 1839 and incorporated in 1841 with power to buy, sell, settle and cultivate land in New Zealand. It did not prove a satisfactory agency for colonising New Zealand and was induced to surrender its charters in 1850. It was finally dissolved in 1858.
