Summary
Description: Includes applications made to the directors of the New Zealand Company by those wishing to emigrate. Such applications enquire into the availability of cabin accommodation, conditions of the colonies and potential employment to be found on arrival. There is a letter written in Maori, forwarded to the directors for translation and sent by a native giving thanks. The translated copy follows the original. There is a lengthy letter sent by Edward Gibbon Wakefield to members of New Zealand Company raising various concerns and suggestions for the wellbeing of the Australasian colonies. He refers specifically to grievances of share holders, foreign policy with indigenous peoples and concerns for the welfare of emigrants settling in the New Zealand and Australian colonies, whom many felt were sent "forth without any provision for good government". Printed items here extend this theme, comparing the government, institutions and organisation of colonies such as New Zealand and Australia with those in Canada. There are also printed items relating to company land orders and the sale of lands in New Zealand, including copies of "Policies of Assurance and Land In New Zealand". There are letters relaying legal claims brought against the company for cost of freight and outstanding payments. Copies of The London Gazette also relay news of various railway companies throughout Britain and feature tables documenting types, quantities, and prices of corn imported into principal British ports.
Note
The New Zealand Company was a chartered company formed in 1839 and incorporated in 1841 with power to buy, sell, settle and cultivate land in New Zealand. It did not prove a satisfactory agency for colonising New Zealand and was induced to surrender its charters in 1850. It was finally dissolved in 1858.
