Aluminum reduction of molybdenum and tungsten higher chlorides and bromides in the appropriate sodium tetrahalo-aluminate melt has been shown to be a convenient and safe procedure for the preparation of the corresponding molybdenum and tungsten (II) chlorides and bromides in good yields.
