Biographical or Historical Sketch
Alphonse de Lamartine was a French writer and politician. He is perhaps best remembered as one of the first poets to flourish as part of the French Romantic movement. His contribution to Romanticism was mitigated by his often unpopular political sentiments, and his influence on 20th century poets and poetry is affected as a result.
