The collection consists of a manuscript translation of a hymn by Paul Gerhardt, undated, with the title, Hymn by Paul Gerhard, kindly sent to England by a beloved friend in Germany. The first line is, "Commit thy ways, thy sorrows." There is no indication of the translator, although "From Mrs. K. Richardson" is at the top of page one.

Paul Gerhardt was a Lutheran minister in Germany, who wrote a number of memorable hymns. Using traditional forms inspired by Martin Luther, Gerhardt wrote simple, powerful songs of faith and piety that continue to be used in Lutheran hymnals today.
