- The collection consists of four letters from Grein to Whelen, including: 19 Mar. 1901, granting rights to produce Gerhart Hauptmann's Einsame Menschen in England; 15 Apr. 1901, about his current activities; 4 Mar. 1903, including handwritten notes for his article on the production of the play A man of honour; 27 Apr. 1911, announcing he has accepted Presidency of the German Volkstheater in London, and asking permission to use the Kingsway Theatre for a production.

- J.T. Grein was a British playwright, critic, and theatre manager. He chose plays to produce based upon their literary or artistic merit, rather than popularity, including early works by Shaw and Ibsen. He was an influential critic, and helped to promote the movement of plays between England and continental Europe.
