- Summary
- Description: John Aldred Luxford was a Methodist clergyman. He saw service in the South African War as a Methodist chaplain and with the outbreak of war in 1914 he volunteered to work as a chaplain for the NZ troops. He was attached to different regiments but spent longer periods with the Wellington and Otago Infantry Regiments. He worked as a chaplain in Egypt before being sent to Gallipoli where he was severely wounded and he had to have a leg amputated. Eventually he was sent to England where he was appointed chaplain to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames. His diaries were sent home as each was completed and because of this many of the entries include notes to his wife.Contains 5 diaries covering the periods 5 April 1915 - 24 May 1915, 25 May 1915 to 1 June 1915, 2 June to 7 June 1915, 8 June 1915 to 25 July 1915 and 26 July to 12 Aug 1915. The diaries describe Luxford's life and work in Egypt as a chaplain to the NZ troops. For much of this period he was responsible to the Otago Infantry Regiment. The last diaries details his movement to Gallipoli and the last entry was written on the 12 Aug 1915 when he was wounded. The diaries finish there.See also MSX-3468; MSX-3469 and MS-Papers-4454-1.
