- Summary
- Description: Manuscript diary written during Hewish's service as an officer in the 4th Battalion Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry in Herne Bay, United Kingdom, February to December 1917, providing a chronological record of wartime events as perceived from the Home Front. It mentions Zeppelin raids on Britain (March) and daylight raids on Folkestone (May) and Margate (August); his training and appointment as Brigade Training Supervising Officer before promotion to Captain; his eagerness to go to the Western Front and frustration at the lack of work at home; conditions on the Home Front including rising food prices, shortages and voluntary rationing; and the wounding of his brother in action and the scarcity of information on his condition. There are also a few papers relating to his brother, Private A J Hewish of the 14th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment (105th Brigade, 35th Division), who died in action on the Western Front in October 1917.
