Description: Letters and field postcards written to his wife, covering his service as a Lance Corporal on the Western Front in the 18th Battalion (90th Brigade, 30th Division). Includes details of life in French billets, experiences with French civilians, concern for his wife and child back home and the conditions under which they were living, criticism of the high food prices and the British government, visits from Lord Derby (Secretary of State for War) and Field Marshal Haig, and hopes for the future. He gives very little information about experiences of combat, being concerned about the censorship rules. Some letters include sketches.
