Summary
Renewable energy sources have been widely deployed in electric power grids to account for concerns of greenhouse gas emissions caused by fossil fuels. Solar energy, in particular, is increasing in popularity and application, therefore, the need to utilize such energy and convert it to usable alternating current (AC) power is becoming more important. This paper describes the design and testing of a three-phase Silicon Carbide (SiC) based 1000-Watt inverter for photovoltaic applications, in an effort to increase the efficiency of renewable energy resources in power grids. Simulations were conducted with MATLAB/Simulink software and used in constructing a physical prototype. The prototype utilizes custom voltage and current sensing circuits and a Texas Instruments C2000 Microcontroller Unit for proper control and monitoring of the system. Experimental results were used to verify the performance of the PWM generation, sensing circuits, and the inverter design.
