- Biographical or Historical Sketch:
- Mary Roberts was born into a poor family in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she met and married Dr. Stanley Rinehart. A stock market crash in 1903 wiped out their savings, and she began to publish stories to relieve their debt. This began her long career as a popular writer of mystery and romance novels, featuring intuitive storytelling, intricate plots, and suspenseful pacing; her tales were marred somewhat by coincidental occurrences and romantic complications. She served as a foreign correspondent in World War I, and her lively memoir of this period was also popular.
